A total of 142 people have been arrested in connection with rhino poaching so far this year, an official said on Thursday. Most of them, 62, were caught in Kruger National Park, environmental affairs spokesman Albi Modise said.
There were 30 arrests in KwaZulu-Natal, 27 in Limpopo, and 11 in the North West. Nine were arrested in Mpumalanga, and three in Gauteng.
Of 488 rhino poached in the country this year, 300 were in the Kruger National Park.
Modise said North West reported 53 poachings, Limpopo 52, KwaZulu-Natal 43, Mpumalanga 35, Gauteng three, and the Eastern Cape two.
A total of 333 rhino were poached in 2010, 448 in 2011, and 668 last year.
