The members of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) today staged demonstrations in front of the offices of the Deputy Commissioners and Sub Divisional Officers in protest against the failure of the Government to control price rise and to protect the one-horned rhinos.
In a statement, the AGP said that the statements of the Chief Minister and the Food and Civil Supplies Minister encouraged a section of unscrupulous traders. The regional party alleged that the Government is not at all interested in mitigating the sufferings of the common people by controlling the prices of the essential commodities. In fact, the Government has some kind of understanding with a section of unscrupulous traders, the AGP alleged.
The regional party further said that the Government's action of allowing the syndicates to function also added to price rise and demanded immediate steps to control the prices.
The AGP also alleged that the Chief Minister has remained a silent spectator to unabated killings of rhinos in various national parks and wild life sanctuaries of the State. The party said that the famous one-horned rhinos of Assam are not safe under the rule of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain, who totally failed in protecting the rhinos.
Meanwhile, in a separate statement, the AGP strongly criticized former Punjab Police Director General of Police KPS Gill for his statement on the death of Khargeswar Talukdar, the first martyr of the Assam movement.
The AGP said that Gill, who had also served in Assam, insulted the people of Assam with his statement on the death of Talukdar and warned that no one should insult the sentiments of the people of the State.
