Ahead of ruling on the bail application by three organized poachers on Wednesday, the forest department on Tuesday filed a charge sheet in the tiger poaching cases that have come to light in Vidarbha recently.
JMFC RB Raja will decide the bail application of notorious poachers Siri, Yarlen and Barsul on Wednesday. All three are in magisterial custody till August 12.
The charge sheet was filed a day before the mandatory 60 day period to file it ended. According to forest officials they were busy preparing the charge sheet for the past three days. Had the charge sheet not been filed within 60 days, the poachers would have automatically got bail.
Meanwhile, the attempts by forest officials to hush up a tiger death in Akot wildlife division last year were exposed when a primary offence report (POR) was finally registered in the poaching.
For the past two months, as the tiger poaching case was exposed by TOI, Melghat officials had been reluctant to file a POR in the tiger poaching in Akot. They argued that no such incident had occurred in their area. This was despite the poachers themselves telling the investigating officials that they had killed a tiger in Akot.
No POR has been filed even in Bhandarbodi (Ramtek) case, from where a trader from Haryana, Sarju Bagdi, had procured six tiger skins.
