Fishermen Dan Worley and Larry Dost thought the worst when they couldn’t roust any of the trout that had been stocked in the children’s area of Latimore Creek last Thursday, and saw very few in Bermudian Creek two days before the first day of the season.
Out of curiosity, Adams County’s Latimore Township supervisors went to check on the supply of fish and thought that a couple of hands full of trout food would excite some of the hungry torpedoes that had been released for the youngsters to catch. What they got instead was calm, empty water, and a creel of concern.
“Where did the trout go?” Worley wondered. He called the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, and his suspicion was that the trout had either been fished out illegally before the season could open or that the commission hadn’t stocked fish as it claimed.
Trout stocking is hardly a secret. Release times and dates are made public. Volunteers mobilize to pull on waders and help put fish into the water, and a passel of gawkers, wanting an early taste of spring and to see fish, convoy behind the trout truck. No way is the commission going to quietly bail on a stocking appointment.
Thoughts differ on whether the Latimore trout simply dispersed. The creek got its preseason fish on March 14 and the Yellow Breeches Anglers added trout to the children’s area after that.
Cumberland-Franklin County Waterways Conservation Officer Dave Hurst said that once fish locate suitable habitat, food and structure, they usually don’t migrate far from that area.
Adams-YorkWater Conservation Officer Dan Nietupski said he thinks stocked fish have been moving quite a bit and locating them has been a problem for anglers around the state.
Whatever the reason, there was agreement that something had to be done at the Latimore Creek children’s area.
In an unusual move, the Fish and Boat Commission released an additional 400 fish from the Huntsdale hatchery on Good Friday afternoon, the day before the season opened.
“Anywhere else, we would not have gotten fish,” Nietupski admitted. “They’ll say, ‘the fish moved, sorry’.” More....
