A group of poachers in Lama upazila of Bandarban have been hunting deer arbitrarily and selling venison at local bazaars in broad daylight, however, no action was taken from the authorities of forest department in this regard.
Local sources said a deer hunting gang had poached three deer in the last one week. They usually catch the wild animal by setting traps and slaughter it on the hills under different unions of the upazila. Forest guards under the divisional forest sometimes assist them in slaughtering deer.
Inhabitant of Phashiakhali union, Md Yunus said venison costs Tk200-300 per kg in local bazaars and Tk500 per kg in city markets.
Besides, local officers of forest department, administration and police stations have been getting share of venison after hunting any deer, said a forest guard.
Forest Officer of Lama Md Said Ali, however denying the allegation said, “I also get the news of deer poaching, but, we could not trace any of the offenders.”
According to Bangladesh Wildlife (Preservation) Order 1974, the punishment for this offense will be not more than one year of imprisonment and a fine of Tk500 to Tk1000.
