Convicted al-Shabaab member Elgiva Bwire Oliacha, also known as Mohammed Seif, confessed to police that he transported more than two dozen grenades from Somalia to Nairobi through the Kitui Game Reserve, Kenya's Daily Nation reported Monday (September 23rd).
The new revelation raises concerns in wake of the Westgate mall attack in Nairobi that the reserves are being used as terrorist safe havens. Oliacha told officers that he traveled for extended periods in the game reserve after finishing military training in Somalia.
He is serving a life sentence after pleading guilty to being involved in terrorism activities.
Kitui South lawmaker Rachael Nyamai said the region has 5,000 illegal inhabitants, some of whom she alleged participate in poaching and terrorism. She called on the government to clear them from the area.
