A man has denied illegally importing ivory. Nicholas Maweu was is accused of aiding the transport of 444 of ivory worth Sh164.35 million at the port of Mombasa in Changamwe on July 8.
He is accused of attempting to transport the ivory to Malaysia. Maweu's lawyer Elijah Waithera asked the court to release him on bond.
Prosecutor Simon Waithaka requested the court to grant the accused a bond that is equivalent to and reflects the value of the ivory he was found with.
Senior Resident Magistrate Richard Odenyo granted Maweu Sh100,000 bond with a surety of a similar amount. In the same court, a woman was accused with kidnapping with an intent to kill.
Janeffer Okwili denied abducting a 10-year-old at Mnazi Mmoja in Kisauni, Mombasa county on Saturday. The court was informed that the accused tricked the child to accompany her to her house.
Okwili then locked the child in her house and warned her not to leave. The girl, with the help of the neighbours, sought help and Okwili was reported to the Nyali police station.
Odenyo released the accused on a Sh300,000 bond with a surety of a similar amount. The case will be heard on March 10.
