In the backdrop of the recent incidents of poaching by some foreign nationals in Andaman and Nicobar islands, the drug enforcement officials from the Maldives Government have approached their Indian counterparts seeking to shed more light on the issue.
However, top security officials in Andaman and Nicobar islands confirmed that no Maldives national was found involved in the issue.
It was a couple of months ago that the Coast Guard in the Andaman and Nicobar islands apprehended some poachers and seized some boats. The security forces also seized some boats made in Myanmar.
The poachers were identified as nationals of neighbouring countries, including Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand and Sri Lanka. There were some unconfirmed reports that people from Maldives were also involved.
Following this, the officials of the Maldives Drug Enforcement Department began collecting details on the issue. Though they came across inputs from informants, no official information was received in this regard, Mohamed Jinah, Superintendent of Police, who is the head of the Drug Enforcement Department, Maldives, said.
