Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Dr. Rajitha Senaratna is scheduled to visit India next month to hold discussions with Tamil Nadu authorities on the problems being faced by the fishing community in the North.
The Minister expects to hold discussions with the Indian Union Minister for Agriculture Sharad Power about violation of maritime territories of the fishermen of both countries. The Minister has told the Indian Daily, "The Hindu" that he is undertaking the visit on an invitation extended by the Indian Minister for External Affairs Salman Kurshid. However, the date of meeting has not been announced yet. During the last few days Sri Lanka Navy has taken into custody 140 Indian fishermen who were poaching in the Sri Lankan maritime territory. He said that after this the Indian Government has decided to expedite the discussions.
