Three rhino poachers, one of whom was wounded in a shootout with field rangers, were arrested over the weekend while the national poaching figure continued to climb to 249 since the start of the year.
“The poachers were arrested in the Tshokwane region which is very deep in the Kruger National Park towards the Mozambique border.
“Their spoor was spotted by rangers who then alerted the control room and there was a joint ground and air operation. A .458 hunting rifle fitted with a silencer, ammunition, a pair of rhino horns and other poaching related equipment was recovered.
“The carcass of a black rhino was found near the scene of the arrest,” South African National Parks (SanParks) media specialist, Ike Phaahla said.
