In the last 10 years, 156 rhinos have been killed by poachers in the State with the incidents of rhino poaching assuming alarming proportions during the period.
While six rhinos were poached in 1999, the figure rose to 40 in the year 2013.
However, rhino population, too, has witnessed a rise during the period. The population has risen to 2544 (2013) from 1672 in 1999.
These facts were featured in the written reply by Forest and Environment Minister Rockybul Hussain to a question by AGP MLA Utpal Datta today.
Although the Minister stated a number of initiatives have been taken against poaching, he, however, conceded that effort has not shown mnuch results.
