Conservation officers say poaching is a big problem in our area, something they want everyone to remember as we head into this weekend and hunting season.
Scott County DNR officers say deer poaching is their number one priority. They see it with other animals like otter, fish and eagles but right now they're working on 500 to one thousand cases of deer poaching some going back several years.
"These are large record class deer that some hunters will only see once in their entire life and unfortunately they're being shot with rifles or bow and arrows or unlawfully taken," said Jeff Harrison, conservation officer. "Illegal tags are used for them. It's just getting really out of hand in certain places."
Something he says is important to always keep in mind but also for every season. Dove season starts Sunday September 1st in Iowa but if you shoot one Saturday, that's poaching.
