The Central Intelligence Unit of Sri Lanka Customs has seized a large consignment of African ivory and logs transshipped through the Colombo sea port today.
The Intelligence Unit has discovered three containers of the embargoed items at the sea port transported from Kenya to Dubai via Colombo by a private company.
The stock of ivory contained over 400 tusks believed to be of South African origin. The Sri Lanka Customs have estimated the value of the ivory at 36 million rupees.
According to Customs officials this was one of the largest ivory smuggling discovered in the country.
Sri Lanka Customs is to decide regarding the actions on the ivory consignment.
