Sri Lanka Navy has arrested 20 Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu on Thursday for allegedly poaching in Sri Lankan waters and seized their boats.
SLNS Udara attached to the Northern Naval Command and Sri Lanka Coast Guard on routine patrol arrested the 20 Indian fishermen and 5 trawlers on 21st November.
The fishermen were engaged in illegal fishing in the seas north of Analathivu, an islet about five kilometers off Kayts near the Jaffna peninsula, the Navy said.
The Navy handed over the arrested fishermen to the Assistance Director of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Jaffna for legal actions.
The Sri Lankan government has recently adopted a new policy of detaining Indian fishermen arrested for poaching in Sri Lankan waters for a long time and confiscating their boats to deter the Indian fishermen from trespassing into Sri Lankan waters.
