Sri Lankan Navy personnel have arrested another 20 Tamil Nadu fishermen for allegedly poaching in Sri Lankan waters and seized their five boats, according to a report from the Fisheries Department of Tamil Nadu.
According to an official of the Tamil Nadu Fisheries Department one of the seized boats was using banned fishing nets and another one was operating without a proper license but the rest had valid licenses. However, the boats were allegedly operating in Sri Lankan waters.
The arrest comes a day after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa in a second letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh within 24 hours blasted the Central Indian government for not taking sufficient action to prevent Sri Lankan Navy arresting Tamil Nadu fishermen.
She urged the PM to immediately summon the Sri Lankan High commissioner in New Delhi and secure the immediate release of the 65 fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on July 30.
Sri Lanka says Indian fishermen, taking advantage of Sri Lanka's procedure of releasing them after mediation by the Indian High Commission office, are deliberately indulge in illegal fishing.
