I’ve just received these images of yet another hippo killed on the shores of Lake Edward in the park. They were taken last week by the team of investigators from IDPE at coordinates 0.68562 South, 029.37643 East in the Mwiga Bay near Vitshumbi. (see map)
We are not sure who exactly did this, but in the past it has been FARDC soldiers, Mai-Mai rebels, and other armed groups who have been responsible for killing hippos and elephants in this area for their meat. This is only the latest in a long series of poaching incidents which has caused what was once the most important population of hippos in the world to dwindle to only a couple hundred.
With your help, the Rangers continue against all the odds to stop this slaughter. Please invite your friends to join our team or check out our facebook cause to spread the word.
