Two suspected poachers have been gunned down, 32 arrested, six firearms and 33 rounds of ammunition recovered in various parts of the country over the last two weeks.
The two suspected poachers were shot dead yesterday in a forest adjacent to Aberdares National Park while one escaped with injuries and a rifle recovered. The suspects had shot and injured an elephant.
Five motorbikes, buffalo and hippo meat were also recovered.
In Tsavo East around Ithumba area on Wednesday (May 9, 2012) seven suspects fled with injuries after a fierce gunfight with KWS rangers. They dropped two AK-47 rifles with three rounds of ammunition while fleeing.
In Narok on Saturday (May 12, 2012), two suspect poachers were arrested with two rifles and 14 rounds of ammunition. They were booked at the Narok Police Station.
In Lamu County, a suspected poacher was arrested on Saturday (May 19, 2012) with a rifle, one magazine and 16 rounds of ammunition in Witu area. In the same county in the Lakeside area on Thursday (May 17, 2012) suspects escaped but their two motorbikes and 200 kg of hippo meat were seized.
