Professional poachers are operating across Devon, leaving animals with horrific injuries and putting people at risk, police have warned.
It follows the killing of three sheep by dogs at Buckfastleigh.
Pc John Fisher from Devon and Cornwall Police said: "This activity is criminal and the level of cruelty inflicted on the sheep is really worrying."
In a case earlier this year poachers were prosecuted for shooting deer at Haldon.
Pc Fisher said: "We found a notebook that contained names and telephone numbers with orders for beef, poultry, lamb, pork, fish and venison.
"Somebody was running a business supplying meat as a professional poacher.
"This meat is being supplied in an unhygienic fashion so anyone who buys it is running that risk."
He asked for people to look out for owners of lurcher dogs which had been cross-bred with bull terriers and to report anything suspicious to the police.
"Countrymen have traditionally hunted rabbits for the pot with lurchers, but we are now seeing a new cross-breed with a bigger head and larger jaws."
