Hearing stories of animal abuse, like this one, makes our skin crawl. It’s beyond our scope of understanding how people could ever consciously inflict such malicious harm on other living beings. However, sadly, it seems that instances of animal abuse occur everyday nonetheless.
Recently, four teenagers in California were arrested as suspects for the death of 920 chickens at Foster Farms. The chickens are believed to have been bludgeoned to death with a golf club. According to investigators, the teens were able to enter the farm facility by pulling back the wall on one chicken shed. Part of a golf club was discovered on the scene and investigators were able to trace evidence back to the four suspects, with the help of social media monitoring and tips.
What drove these four young people to want to kill nearly 1,000 innocent chickens is still unknown. When news of the incident broke, Animal Legal Defense Fund offered a reward of $10,000 for anyone who could provide information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
What is most shocking about this news is that the assailants were teenagers. Granted, teens have a tendency towards acting on impulse, but killing 920 chickens can hardly be considered a rash outburst. Of all things, this story drives home the fact that it is so important to teach children about compassion and respect for all living beings from a young age.
It is unfortunate that these teens were born into a world where animal abuse occurs so frequently, and is potentially even considered a form of entertainment, but there needs to be an underlying understanding that all living things deserve our care and respect. Every one of us has a choice every single day and when empowered with knowledge and understanding, we can choose to do better.
