LODWAR (Xinhua) -- Six more people have been killed by cattle rustlers and several herds of cattle stolen in two separate attacks in Kenya’s Rift Valley, Kenya Red Cross Society said on Friday.
Armed warriors from Pokot community attacked and killed four Turkana herdsmen before stealing over 200 herds of cattle in Kaitiwo village.
During the attack, two other herders sustained bullet wounds and were rescued and taken to hospital.
“The herders were grazing their animals when they were ambushed by over 30 warriors. Four were killed and two other wounded by the rustlers who drove away several herds of cattle,” said Oscar Lomekel, KRCS official based in Kainuk at the troubled Turkana- Pokot border.
Local lawmaker James Lomenen accused the government of disarming the home guards in Turkana County arguing the action has left the local herders vulnerable to attacks from their neighbors.
“The disarmament of the Kenya police reserve on our side has fueled attack from the rival community. Our people are not protected by the police and this has increased attacks from the Pokots,” protested Lomenen.
The leaders said that several families along the Turkana-Pokot border are fleeing their homes due to persistent insecurity. “ There is security and affected families are fleeing the border to safe areas. The attacks have worsened the hunger situation,” said Lomenen.
He said the theft of the livestock has left many families without food since they entirely depends cattle for food. Lomenen said that the killing of the four herders brings to eight the number of people including two police reserve officers.
In Samburu East district, armed bandits shot and killed two people. Two other people were injured during the attack on Learata road on the Isiolo-Marsabit highway.
Local KRC coordinator Mugambi Gitonga said the bandit erected an illegal roadblock before opening fire at the motorists plying the highway.
“Tension is high in the area and police have to act and bring to book these bandits behind insecurity in the county,” said Gitonga. He said the injured victims are admitted at Wamba mission hospital.
