The guard ship Tver of the Western Arctic area division of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) Border Department has detained the Adexe Primero vessel, flying the flag of Spain in the exclusive economic zone of Russia, Liliya Moroz, a spokeswoman of the regional office of FSB border administration told Interfax.
"The vessel was found on July 16; it was suggested that they should go to the port of Murmansk for the purposes of further investigation," the spokeswoman said.
She said the Spanish vessel "was conducting illegal crab fishery."
The arrival of Adexe Primero vessel, accompanied by the guard ship at Murmansk port, is expected on July 19.
In September 2014, also in the exclusive economic zone of Russia, the Juros Vilkas fishing vessel flying Lithuanian flag was detained under similar circumstances. As a result of court proceedings that followed detention of the vessel, the vessel's captain, Alexander Grushko, was pronounced guilty in "violation of standards governing activities in the inland sea waters of the Russian Federation." The Murmansk court of Oktyabrsky District bound the captain to pay a fine of more than 4 million rubles ($70,000).
