The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders’ Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Kaduna yesterday confirmed that some of its members that were recently repatriated from Niger State migrated following persistent rustling and robberies.
The herders who migrated to a forest in Niger State from Rijana in Kaduna State in search of a new settlement were sent back at the weekend.
MACBAN Chairman in Kaduna State, Alhaji Ahmadu Suleiman, said a household that moved to Niger from Rijana, Kaduna was sent back home following lack of grazing areas, adding that they relocated initially to stay away from thieves.
He said pastoralists in the area were being attacked daily by thieves and called on the government to step up surveillance. “The herders are not safe, they are being killed together with their wives while their livestock are being stolen. Government should give them adequate protection”, he pleaded.
