JAIPUR: The famous elephant festival which was scheduled a day before holi at polo ground has been cancelled for the second consecutive year. Sources said that Animal Welfare Board (AWB) has not responded on the permission of using elephants in the festival sought by the tourism department.
The festival was part of every year Holi celebration until last year. Festival features procession of bedecked elephants, camels, horses and folk dancers. Elephants are decorated with vibrant colours and heavy jewellery mark past the audience.
What caught the ire of animal rights activist is embellishment of elephants with chemical laced colours. The activists contended that acts in elephant festival come under animal performance category and needs to be registered before the AWB.
Sahil Singhal, V-C, People for Animal, "In the light of Performing Animals (Registration) Rules, 2001 such animals cannot be used for any festival without seeking permission from AWB."
