A herd of 45 wild elephants, including two calves, were chased away to Denkanikottai Reserve Forests after nearly two months, said A.K. Ulaganathan, District Forest Officer, here on Saturday.
Fire crackers were used to scare away the animals, he said. Farmers in and around Podurpallam, and Sanamavu had decided to block roads on Friday in protest against the lax attitude of the Forest Department officials.
After District Collector T.P. Rajesh promised to take action, they decided to drop the agitation.
Mr. Ulaganathan said that the herd was unlikely to return to Podurpallam, as most of the farmers have finished harvesting of food crops in the area.
Another herd of 33 elephants that had migrated to Chittoor Reserve Forests from Hosur Forest Division two months ago was likely to return to Tamil Nadu in another three days. Adequate staff had been posted to prevent its entry to human habitations.
