Owners of tamed elephants joined a protest march on Wednesday to demand tuskers under an animal exchange programme with other countries and more permits for tamed elephants, as the number of such animals had decreased drastically in recent years.
The protest which began at Pelawatta saw nearly 20 jumbos brought for the protest march that led towards the Wildlife Ministry.
Protesters handed over of a petition to the Wildlife authorities.
Meanwhile Environmental Organizations have charged about an ongoing racket where wild elephant calves are poached for sale.
Earlier on, on a tip-off given by Environmental Organizations, the Wildlife officers were able to find an injured wild elephant calf while it was kept in a house at Arawwala in Maharagama recently.
