A herd of 40 elephants barged into Kamardanga village in Sonamukhi PS area in Bankura last night. A villager Chhobi Bauri (30) was also killed during the attack by the elephants.
The tusker broke through the mud-wall of Mr Gorachand Bauri house when the entire family was sleeping.
Mr Bauri said: “My four- year-old son got frightened seeing the animal inside the house. The moment he screamed, the tusker attacked Chhobi (the mother).
DFO, Bankura (North), Mr Sudip Chandra Das said that the forest department was trying to drive the herd out and forty elephants which was detached from the herd have intruded in Sonamukhi village.
Man kills monkey: In Kanchannagar locality of Burdwan, police raided the house of a youth Ratan Sadak after he killed a monkey by his airgun.
Mr Sumol Mishtry, councillor of the local municipal ward said: “The monkey was eating vegetables on the rooftop of his house. The youth got irritated and shot the monkey with his airgun, killing it instantly.”
The forest department has lodged a complaint against the youth. Police arrested him on charges of violation of section 9 of the wildlife protection Act.
