Five suspects aged between 17 and 38 years-old will appear at the Hluhluwe Magistrate's Court Tuesday on charges of illegal hunting, attempted murder, possession of a unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Police spokesperson in KwaZulu-Natal Thulani Zwane says the suspects were arrested at the weekend at a private game reserve.
The suspects were allegedly found poaching inside the Phinda Game Reserve.
Police members received information about their whereabouts and when they approached the suspects they shot at the police who then retaliated against them.
One suspect was wounded during the shooting and he was taken to hospital for treatment.
All of them were arrested and they were found in possession of a hunting rifle, axe as well as a silencer.
