CUTTACK: Panic gripped Cuttack on Friday after a herd of eight elephants were seen moving at Brajabiharipur, on the outskirts of the city.
The elephants were spotted at Dhabaleswar ghat, Naraj and nearby area.
Forest officials said they had earlier seen the herd roaming in Khuntuni forest range. "Our officials are keeping an eye on the movement of the elephants to prevent them from entering the city," said divisional forest officer, Cuttack, Sudarshan Behera.
"We are also trying to drive them back into Khuntuni range, but they are in no mood to return," he added.
"The pachyderms usually move in the night. We are hopeful that the herd will either go back to Khuntuni or move towards Choudwar," added Behera.
This is the second such incident when elephants were seen moving on the outskirts of the city. In December, an elephant had strayed into Hadia Patha and forest officials had a tough time driving it away.
