KANUNGU - A herd of 10 elephants from neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo has invaded Nyanga sub-county in Kanungu district after crossing River Ishasha.
The beasts have destroyed crops in the gardens and forced residents to flee their homes.
Nyanga councillor Felicita Ruryabandi said the elephants are roaming in Rurama and Runyinya villages where they have destroyed banana and coffee gardens.
Some 10 families have been affected by the invasion.
Ruryabandi said the animals entered Uganda last Monday and the residents who fled their homes are camping at Runyinya Church of Uganda.
A Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) officer, Joshua Masereka, said they will drive the elephants back into the wild.
