Haliyal: As many as 36 elephants, 24 female and 12 male, have been found in the forests of Haliyal taluk, Prachi Mehta of Wildlife Research and Conservation Society (WRCS) of Pune, who conducted a research in collaboration with Asian Elephant Conservation Fund on the subject, has said.
Addressing farmers and mediapersons at a workshop on elephant conservation at Kulagi Nisargadhama here recently, he said only when there was scarcity of food in the forests, the elephants come out to farm lands in search of food.
The elephant menace could be controlled by using the smoke of dry chilly and tobacco or by hanging a cloth after applying their mixture on it. Another way was to fix beehives in pots around paddy fields.
He released and displayed a 23-minute CD on controlling elephant menace and distributed them to farmers and forest officials.
