The relatives of a man killed at Solio Ranch in Nyeri county last week said he was not a poacher. They said William Kariuki, 48, was killed elsewhere and dumped at the ranch.
The family said Kariuki has never been involved in poaching. Speaking in Nyahururu town yesterday, Kariuki's brother Geoffrey Macharia said Kariuki was a businessman at Kiawara and Gatundia trading centres. He said Kariuki was shot dead by the police on allegations that he and officer George Mwangi were hunting rhinos at the ranch.
"It was a painful experience to lose my brother in such circumstances and we want thorough investigations into the killings," Macharia said.
He said pathological reports indicate Kariuki was killed at close range, which contradict claims of a fierce shootout between him and security personnel. Macharia said his brother was a known businessman who lived at Gatundia in Laikipia county and usually bought cereals and onions at Endarasha village in Nyeri.
"Solio Ranch has become a death bed for many people on allegations of poaching. People have lost their lives in unclear circumstances," Macharia said.
