A motorist yesterday hit and killed a leopard near Tlya Tea Factory on the Kericho- Nakuru road. The leopard had strayed from Mau Forest. Residents of Mau Tea area in Kipkelion East, Kericho county, alerted Kenya Wildlife Service Kericho officer in charge Salome Chelelgo who sent wardens to collect the carcass.
Residents jammed the scene to have a glimpse of the dead animal, which is rarely spotted in the area. Speaking to the press in her office in Kericho town, Chelelgo said there are leopards in the area but they rarely stray. She said her office is waiting for word from KWS headquarters on whether to skin the animal before disposing of it or bury it whole.
Chelelgo said that in September last year, a stray leopard killed calves and goats on the lower parts of Ainamoi constituency and injured a KWS officer.
