Police officers in Narok have seized more than 100kgs of zebra meat that was being transported to Nairobi on Tuesday.
Led by Corporal David Chumo, they intercepted the vehicle that was carrying the meat suspected to have been from Masaai Mara Game Reserve at Duka Moja area on the Narok-Mai Mahiu road.
One person was arrested while two occupants of the car escaped into a maize plantation. There was a brief exchange of fire between the police and one of the occupants who was armed with a pistol.
Kenya Wildlife Service Narok senior warden William Sang said the middle-aged man arrested was out on bond on two charges of trafficking game meat.
He said the man sustained multiple left leg fracture as he tried to escape.
"The suspect who sustained multiple fractures had been out on two bonds. We are going to work with police to apprehend those who escaped," said Sang.
He appealed to the the public to assist in eradicating game trade.The suspect was taken to Narok North District Hospital where he was treated and later taken to custody.
