A woman who was found with 20kgs of Zebra meat was fined yesterday. Appearing before a Kilgoris court, Mary Ouma was fined Sh10,000 or six months in jail. Ouma pleaded guilty before resident magistrate Amos Mokoross. She was found with the game meat on Monday at Soimining area in Trans Mara.
Ouma pleaded with Mokoross for forgiveness saying she was not aware that having game meat is a crime. She said she was the sole breadwinner of her family.
Mokoross said a deterrent sentence was needed as poaching of wild game in the Transmara had become rampant and unless it was checked, most of the wild animals which were a major tourist attraction in the Maasai Mara would become extinct.
