Cyprus police anti-poaching unit have arrested a 68-year-old man on suspicion of poaching on Monday.
Members of the anti-poaching unit had stopped the suspect’s car in Paralimni and in turn discovered 11 freshly killed wild birds and 82 limesticks.
The suspect was arrested while the police continue their investigations.
Cyprus is continuing its attempt to stamp out the illegal tradition which saw over 2 million birds killed in 2014.
Birdlife Cyprus also estimates that there is an increased use of illegal limesticks across the island and that restaurants still serve the “garden bird” (ambelopoulia) which are illegal.
Migratory bird species are faced with a growing number of threats, including the persistent and serious problem of illegal bird trapping and killing.
