A shoulder mount of a zebra by Fred Gonzalez, of Nature's Own Wildlife Studio, Lebanon, was judged best of show in the Pennsylvania Taxidermist Association's 2014 Cabela's Taxidermy Weekend, which continues Sunday, Sept. 7, at the store near Hamburg, Berks County. The exhibit will be open for public viewing from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday.
In addition to the display and competition, taxidermists from across the state have been taking in seminars, demonstrations and association meetings throughout the weekend.
Although many award categories, such as People's Choice, won't be awarded until late Sunday, several award winners have been decided. Among those awards are the Wasco Award to Bob Hutchinson of Hutch's Taxidermy & Wildlife Studio, Mount Pleasant, for a mount of a bear cub; Lehigh Valley Safari Club International Award to Jason Krause of Krause's Taxidermy, Pine Grove, for a bear cub mount; Saucony Creek Chapter of Ducks Unlimited Award to John Helm on Somerset, N.J., for a wood duck mount; Schuylkill County Chapter of Trout Unlimited Award to Toby Betzer of Fins-Feathers-Fur Wildlife Gallery, Selinsgrove, for a brook trout mount; Pennsylvania Game Commission Award to Jason Krause of Krause's Taxidermy, Pine Grove, for a mount of a coyote; and Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission Award to Scott Winkler of Kunkletown for a mount of a rainbow trout.
