PHUKET: The Fisheries Department in Krabi on Sunday morning (September 28) searched trawlers from Phuket that were fishing in a forbidden area close to Koh Sriboya.
Eleven crew, both Thai and Burmese, were arrested in possession of more than 200 kilograms of endangered marine species.
Led by Fisheries Department director Jareonchai Srisuwan, the officials boarded two boats, the Chaitakan 17 and Chaitakan 15, and seized the catches and the fishing equipment from the boats.
They questioned five Burmese and six Thai fishing crew, including the leader, Khempetch Chaisri, 51, from Roi Et.
The officials said later that the fisherman all admitted they knew they were fishing in a banned area but said they took the risk of being caught because fish in this area are abundant.
