BAREILLY: A gang of poachers shot and then chopped the horns of a blackbuck in front of residents of Kalyanpur village near Bareilly on Thursday. Villagers said the gang of four poachers armed with country-made pistols chased and then shot animal when it ventured close to Kalyanpur around 2pm.
Villagers, who feared being shot, informed forest officials after the gang escaped with the horns. By the time officials moved the animal to a veterinary hospital it had died.
Talking to TOI, district forest officer Dharam Singh Yadav said, "Villagers have recognized some of the poachers. We have registered a complaint against them under Section 9 and 51 of Wildlife Protection Act."
The black buck is included in Schedule I of Indian Wildlife Act, 1972.
