Police in Guangxi province of China were suspicious of a car that looked heavier than it should be and discovered 39 pangolins packed into a compartment in the back of the vehicle.
On Janauary 24th port officials in Fangcheng had their suspicions raised when a car carrying 2 people appeared to have fake licence plates. The police followed the car and then overtook it and braked sharply as they came to a toll barrier. The car though appeared to take longer to stop than it should and the way the car slowed down concerned the police as it appeared to be heavier than it should for just 2 passengers.
The police allowed the car to carry on but followed it and the officers became increasingly concerned over the way the car was speeding up and then slowing down.
After 5km of following the officers decided to pull the car over. As the officers opened the door of the car they were hit with a strong smell.
They carried out a full search of the car and found a cargo of bound pangolins covered in blood from injuries in compartments hidden below and behind the back seats.
One of the people managed to run away and escape but the second person was held and arrested.
The state forestry department is now investigating the case.
