MERU COUNTY: Six suspected gunmen were Monday night gunned down in Timau along Meru-Nanyuki road and two AK47 rifles recovered from them.
Police say the gunmen were heading to Nairobi in two vehicles and were part of a gang that has been behind cases of poaching.
The shooting was staged at a roadblock by local officers and another team from CID headquarters. Poaching has been a menace in the country leading to loss of several precious wild animals. CID director Ndegwa Muhoro said they are hunting more poachers.
“We have teams all over now looking or these people who have been terrorising animals,” said Muhoro.
Elsewhere a suspected thug was Monday shot dead by police and two guns with 16 bullets and a pair of police uniforms found on him in Nairobi’s Umoja area.
Police say they recovered an AK47 rifle that had 10 bullets and a pistol that had six bullets from the man and that his two accomplices managed to escape on a motorbike. The men are said to have been heading for a robbery mission when police were alerted. Witnesses said they saw police flag a vehicle down before they heard gunfire minutes later. The body was later moved to the mortuary.
