Friday August 1, 2014 - Police in Narok Town have arrested the mastermind behind the wanton killing of elephants and rhinos in Maasai Mara Game Reserve – A man named Daniel Karanja Mutemi.
Muchemi was arrested after sh8.4 million worth of elephant tusks weighing 84Kgs were impounded stashed in his house in Majengo.
The police were led into Muchemi’s house after one suspect, who was working for him in the poaching business, turned against him and sold him out.
Speaking yesterday, Narok North OCPD, Paul Leitting, and KWS officer, William Sang, confirmed the tusks originated from the Maasai Mara Game Reserve and that Mutemi was behind the illegal poaching of Kenya’s Big Five.
“The suspect was tracked down from Sikinani Trading Centre at the entrance of the reserve and was traced to his house in Majengo Estate where a crackdown was conducted yielding to the tusks,” said Leitting.
On his part, Sang said they have increased surveillance at the reserve and warned poachers that their days are numbered.
