Three alleged rhino poachers were denied bail after a brief appearance in the Makhado Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
The trio was detained by police and face charges of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, poaching of a rhino, possession of rhino horn and trespassing.
Police spokesperson Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi said the accused, whose names cannot be divulged due to sensitive investigations currently underway, will be in the dock again on June 18.
“The fourth suspect was also arrested on Sunday in connection with the same case and he appeared in the Seshego Magistrate’s Court.
His case has also been remanded to June 18 and he will be transferred to Makhado for him to join his co-accused,” said Mulaudzi.
•Police have arrested three suspected rhino poachers at a private game farm in Alldays just outside Makhado.
The suspects aged between 41 and 36 were arrested on Friday morning after police received information that a rhino had been poached inside the farm.
Mulaudzi said police led by the members of the Hawks raced to the farm, surrounded it and after an extensive search the suspects were cornered and arrested in possession of two rhino horns, a ·375 rifle and an axe.
“Subsequent investigations have revealed that two of the suspects were South Africans and one was from Mozambique. A rhino was also found slain.”
