COIMBATORE: A 56-year-old security guard died after he was attacked by a wild elephant on Kanuvai-Pappanaickenpalayam road in the city outskirts on Friday night. The injured man was rushed to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) but he died without responding to treatment.
K Karunakaran of Venkittapuram used to work as a security guard at an engineering firm on Kanuvai-Pappanaickenpalayam road.
On Friday night, Karunakaran reached Kanuvai. He was walking towards his work place when he was attacked by the elephant. Forest department officials said Karunakaran didn't notice the elephant herd which was standing on the road side. One of the elephants pushed him down and he suffered serious head injury.
Some of the passerby noticed him lying in a pool of blood and immediately informed the forest officials. Perianaickenpalayam forest range officer M Nazir and his team reached the spot and sent the victim to CMCH.
"The herd entered near Bharathiar University area near Marudhamalai and it was chased away by forest guards. Later, the herd reached Kanuvai where villagers tried to chase them away. The herd was angry after the villagers chased them away," said forest range officer Nazir.
The body of the victim was handed over to the family members after the postmortem at CMCH on Saturday afternoon. The forest department has given 25,000 to the victim's family as initial relief. The officials said the family will be given 2.75 lakh by the department as compensation.
