Union Minister of state for Sports and Youth Affairs Sarbananda Sonowal today said he would take up the issue of unabated rhino poaching in Assam, especially in Kaziranga National Park (KNP), with the Union Forest and Environment Minister soon.
Mr Sonowal, who is also the Assam unit BJP president, reiterated the party's electoral promise for ensuring the safety of one-horned rhinos from poachers.
He was addressing media persons at Kaziranga on the sidelines of the party's executive meeting.
'I shall soon meet the Union Minister for Forests and Environment and take up with him the issue of rhino poaching in Kaziranga,' he said.
'We are committed to ensuring safety of rhinos as well as other animals from poachers and will keep our promise,' he added.
The Minister informed that altogether 1060 rhinos had been killed in the state from 2002, with 18 being killed so far this year.
He said the party's post electoral meeting was being held to reaffirm the BJP's commitment to its electoral promises.
'Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi had toured the state prior to the polls and made promises to the people. We are committed to deliver on each front,' Mr Sonowal added.
The party won seven of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in the state, its best ever performance in any election here.
