Mpanda — POLICE in Katavi Region have arrested two brothers, residents of Kawajense Street in Mpanda Township for illegally possessing three pieces of elephant tusks valued over 24m/-.
The two were also found in illegal possession of 53 pieces of logs of 'Kipilipili' types valued at 250,000/-.Katavi Regional Police Commander (RPC), Mr Dhahiri Kidavashari named the suspects as Mateso (35) and Damian Kayanda.
According to the RPC, the two were arrested on January 29, this year following a tip off from law abiding citizens who suspected them to be engaged in illicit ivory trade.
Mr Kidavashari said that the police acted on the tip off swiftly and caught them in possession of the government trophies hidden in their house, where they were the only occupants.
The RPC further said that the duo would be arraigned in court as soon as investigations into the matter are completed.
