The Sri Lankan Navy on Tuesday arrested 43 Indian fishermen on charges of poaching off Jaffna peninsula. Five trawlers in their possession were seized, Navy officials said.
The fishermen were arrested north-east of Point Pedro, along the northern tip of Jaffna peninsula, and later brought to Kankesanthurai.
With Tuesday's arrest, the total number of Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan custody rose to 81, and the number of trawlers, to 87.
The arrested fishermen will be handed over to the officials of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Jaffna for legal action, Navy Officials said.
