State wildlife officials said they found three men with several bags of deer meat in Dade City last month and arrested them on poaching charges.
About 9:30 p.m. Feb. 27, officers working a hunting detail on Bellamy Brothers Boulevard observed spotlights and heard gunshots, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said.
About 1 a.m., the officers said they discovered Jason Michael Payne, 36, of Dade City; Eric R. Ohmdahl, 38, of Spring Hill; and Marc P. Laird, 31, of Brooksville cleaning dear at the rear of Payne’s residence, 16225 Bellamy Brothers Blvd.
Officers seized three rifles with lights attached and six bags of deer meat from the men, the FWC said.
Payne, Ohmdahl and Laird face first-degree misdemeanor charges of taking deer at night with gun and light, taking deer during closed season and taking doe deer. Additional charges are pending, the FWC said.
