Further to my letter ‘Perhilitan changing its tune again’ on Jan 30, 2014, Perhilitan has often said it has nothing to hide. A great many people would dispute such a claim, but nevertheless we can put it to the test today.
I invite Perhilitan and the Minister of Natural Resources & Environment to clarify in this forum some outstanding matters concerning confiscated ivory currently in the government’s possession.
None of the information sought should be a state secret – unless of course this is what the minister desires. How many ivory confiscations have there been in the last five years? Will you publish dates, amounts, etc?
How many ivory tusks are now in storage? Numerical quantity and weight. Why has no one ever been arrested or prosecuted? Can you see how suspicious this looks?
What do you intend to do with the ivory? Are there any confiscated rhino horns also held in storage?
Will you publish on the ministry’s website your official written response to the demands from CITES for Malaysia (one of the countries known as the ‘Gang of Eight’ for their highly illegal ivory trade) to curb its ivory trading activity?
I repeat: There is no logical reason why any of the information requested above should remain a secret unless, that is, the minister and Perhilitan don’t want anyone to know such details.
In which case, we have every reason to doubt its claims and sincerity don’t we?
