The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) yesterday accused the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) which claimed to fight for the rights of Tamil people in the Northern Province of being silent on mass scale poaching by Tamil Nadu fishermen in northern waters.
JHU spokesman Nishantha Sri Warnasinghe said that though the TNA was campaigning around the world against the present government claiming that it had violated the rights of Tamil people during the final phase of the war against the LTTE, it was silent on Tamil Nadu poachers taking away the Northern fish resources. "One of the main income sources of Northern people is fishing and the main problem for them is their fish is taken away by Tamil Nadu fishermen," he said.
Warnasinghe said though the TNA was silent on Tamil Nadu poachers, it let out howls of protest when the southern fishermen went to fish in northern seas.
The LTTE, too, chased away the southern fishermen by massacring them in places like Kent and Dollar farms, Warnasinghe said.
Warnasinghe said the LTTE had been silent on Tamil Nadu encroachments and now the TNA was doing the same thing.
"Our stand is both countries should work to stop poaching without giving in to unreasonable demands by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha," the JHU spokesman said.
