Locals at Thori VDC are having sleepless nights for the past one week after a lone elephant often started entering villages and destroying houses, animal sheds and agricultural farm at night.
The elephant broke into a house and attempted to attack humans three days ago. It is speculated that the elephant may have been strayed away from its herd in the Chitwan National Park (CNP). “It is not only at night, we also have to guard our property during the day,” said Prem Lama, a local resident. He said the tusker seems as if it attacks humans just by the smell.
The elephant has been relatively active at Chautara in Thori-1 and Rojinagar-3. According to Lama, the elephant has destroyed more than two dozen houses and agricultural farms.
Meanwhile, local Nawaraj Phunyal said they are troubled by elephant menace every year.
He accused the authorities concerned of being indifferent to their problem though the elephants have been entering villages during harvest season for the past five years.
“We informed the CNP immediately after every incident but nothing has been done for us,” he said, complaining that even the presence of Nepal Police and Armed Police Force units in Thori was of no use for them to keep the elephants away.
